Texas Tech vs. Texas State: Bold Predictions Rewind

Baker Mayfield in the opener, Carlos Thompson against SFA, Davis Webb last week; which true freshman shines against Texas State?

Robert: I’m betting on D.J. Polite-Bray. He got close to making a couple big plays against SFA, so I’m sure he’ll see some time on Saturday.

Shelby: I think it will be Thompson again. His time on the field has shown coaches believe in his ability. It will be a great game for Thompson.

Austin: Zach Barnes. He’s played in a couple of games this season and only has one tackle. Defensively he’s a guy that can make coaches take notice with a solid performance Saturday.

Polite-Bray was targeted once by a true freshman intent on throwing the ball behind him. Thompson never got in the game. Barnes saw playing time late but never recorded a tackle.

Longest pass plays from last week went to running backs. More rushing yards or receiving yards for all backs this week?

Robert: Until Tech runs the ball, they can’t run the ball. Williams and Washington get it done through the air, mostly.

Shelby: Receiving. The offensive line isn’t run blocking well enough to have more rushing yards.

Austin: I’m going to say more rushing yards. It’s about time one of them broke off a big one for a long run.

It wasn’t much, but Tech’s backs finally got it done on the ground. All backs combined for 118 yards.

Robert: 0, Shelby: 0, Austin: 1

When will Kingsbury pull the starters once this one gets out of hand?

Robert: End of the third. Kliff pulled the starters early against SFA to give them a long breather heading into a short week. I think he treats this game kind of like practice reps for his starters.

Shelby: Beginning of third. Since next week is bye week, I think he’ll let them play the half (it will be out of hand by then) and then start going deeper into the roster.

Austin: Third quarter if he can. He can play them a little longer since they have a bye next week.

Thanks to offensive struggles, this one wasn’t completely over till midway through the fourth quarter.

Over/under, Mayfield rushes for 100 yards?

Robert: Under. Mayfield has wheels, but his arm is too good to lean heavily on his running ability.

Shelby: Over. He’s not afraid to take advantage of opportunities given to him.

Austin: Under. After a fairly abysmal passing performance last week I think he’ll look to prove that he can bounce back.

Mayfield couldn’t get anything done last night, much less rush for 100 yards.

Robert: 1, Shelby: 0, Austin: 1

Score?

Robert: 48-13 Tech.

Shelby: 56-14 Tech.

Austin: 55-10 Tech.

Reader pick – webbery: 42-28 Tech.

We all thought this would be a more impressive win than it was.

Robert: 0, Shelby: 0, Austin: 0, webbery: 0

Totals:

Robert: 1 (20%), Shelby: 0 (0%), Austin: 1 (20%), Readers: 0 (0%)

This game wasn’t what anyone expected, and our predictions suffered as a result. We’ll work on it during the bye-week.
