Red Raider Football: Injury Updates

Injuries are a part of any season, but the football gods haven’t been particularly kind to the Red Raiders in this department for several seasons now. Four starters (three offense, one defense) currently sit out with injuries for this ball club, including the preseason favorite at quarterback. Three more backups (one offense, two defense) haven’t been available for a game or two, including offensive lineman Tony Morales who hasn’t played a snap all season.

Michael Brewer – Back

Out since: preseason

Will return: “near future.”

Heir-to-the-throne sophomore quarterback Michael Brewer hasn’t taken a practice snap in over six weeks, much less been in a game situation. Nevertheless, his experience and leadership is sorely missed at the offense’s most important position, and I’m sure Kingsbury can’t wait to have a third option to work with heading into the meat of the schedule. While Brewer’s time table to return isn’t certain, Kingsbury keeps hinting he’s close to a comeback.

“With what I hear from our trainers, I would think the very near future,” Kingsbury said on the Big 12 teleconference Monday morning. “I definitely think when he’s healthy, we’ll see what he’s got.”

Beau Carpenter – Ankle

Out since: SMU

Will Return: Kansas

Junior guard Beau Carpenter, the offensive line’s most experienced player, went down with an ankle injury in the first quarter against SMU. It’s hard to tell if the line’s play suffers as a result, but we can only assume Carpenter was a starter for a reason. His return as a starter or even a backup will be a much needed bolster for this offensive line.

Tony Morales – Shoulder

Out since: preseason

Will return: unknown

Tony Morales had shoulder surgery the week before SMU to repair a lingering injury. No word yet on his status or when he returns.

Alfredo Morales – Leg/Ankle

Out since: Texas State

Will return: unknown

After an ugly lower leg/ankle injury during the Texas State game, expect Morales to miss fairly significant time. The good news is, his injury is described as “not very” serious.

J.J. Gaines – Unknown

Out since: TCU

Will return: Kansas

After playing a great game against TCU, Gaines was held out against Texas State and replaced by true freshman Tanner Jacobson.

Austin Stewart – Ankle

Out since: TCU

Will return: unknown

Stewart was also held out the Texas State game after playing against TCU. No word on what happened to him or when he’ll return, but it doesn’t sound like it’ll be soon. Sophomore Summit Hogue replaced him as Terrance Bullitt’s backup at outside linebacker.

Jeremy Reynolds – Unknown

Out since: Stephen F. Austin

Will return: Kansas

Not sure what’s going on with Reynolds, but he didn’t play against TCU or Texas State. Redshirt freshman LaDarius Newbold took his spot as Bruce Jones’ backup at field corner.
