Texas Tech vs. Kansas: Players of the Game

Texas Tech is one game away from bowl eligibility! Kliff Kingsbury became only the second head coach to win his first five games of his first season in Tech football history. Yesterday’s win had lots of good come from it, but after the first quarter, I think every Texas Tech fan was holding their breath. Thankfully, the team started gaining momentum and the rest is history. So let’s take a look at a few players who really helped cement the win.

Offensive Player of the Game: I’m going with Eric Ward. Amaro, Foster, Grant, Washington, Williams, and Ward all had big days yesterday, but I think Ward deserves this. After some struggles early in the game, Ward looked like a spark was lit. His touchdown was a ridiculous catch while he was covered by a Kansas cornerback. Ward made some huge plays, catching seven receptions for 122 yards and that ridiculously awesome touchdown.

Defensive Player of the Game: This is becoming increasingly difficult to choose. Tech’s defense has been amazing, and not just because of one or two players; it’s everybody. With that being said, I’m going with two players for my defensive player of the game: Will Smith and J.J. Gaines. Smith had yet another great game (I’m starting to see a pattern here), with five solo tackles and one assist. One tackle was for a loss of two yards. He also had a sack – his third for the season. The other player I chose, J.J. Gaines, had his second interception of the season, and returned it for 36 yards. As a result, the very next play ended with a Red Raider touchdown.

Newcomer of the Game: Dylan Cantrell. The true freshman from Whitehouse recorded his first touchdown of his collegiate career. He also added 2 receptions for 11 yards to his stats. I don’t think any of us can really say enough about the caliber of players all the young guys are. Cantrell is looking to have a great future with the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

You could ask ten different people and get ten different answers for who they thought the players of the game are. The Red Raiders are that rounded of a team. So tell me, which players do you think are players of the game?
