Part of Texas Tech’s (7-4, 4-4) struggles the last four weeks after starting the season 7-0 and ranked No. 10 in the BCS are due to injuries and lack of depth at key positions.

Quarterback Michael Brewer wasn’t available for the first five weeks of the season, and his absence necessitated the playing of two true freshmen in every game so far.

Defensive end Dartwan Bush went down against Iowa State with a knee sprain, and Tech is 1-4 ever since. Depth at defensive back and linebacker is being tested by both injuries to starters like Tre Porter and Terrance Bullitt, and by poor play from senior cornerback Ola Falemi.

One of the reasons for depleted depth this year is a rash of recent transfers at key positions. These former Red Raiders may have contributed this season had they stayed in Lubbock.

Delvon Simmons

Defensive end, junior, 6-6/300

2013: Sitting out the season due to NCAA rules after transferring to USC from Texas Tech.

2012: Started 13 games on the defensive line as a sophomore at Texas Tech, recording 27 tackles, six tackles for a loss, two sacks, and two pass deflections.

Daniel Cobb

Linebacker, senior, 6-0/225

2013: Leads the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs with 70 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one blocked kick.

2012: Played in four games for Texas Tech, primarily on special teams, after a legal issue kept him off the team for much of the season. Cobb’s name was eventually cleared and all charges dropped. Received his Bachelor’s Degree in May before transferring to Louisiana Tech.

Jacob Karam

Quarterback, senior, 6-0/205

2013: Karam has yet to play his senior year.

2012: Was immediately eligible to play for the Tigers after graduating magna cum laude from Texas Tech in 2011. Started all 12 games for Memphis, completing 176-of-274 passes for 1895 yards and 14 touchdowns. That 64.2 completion percentage set a new Memphis season record

2011: Saw action in five games as a sophomore at Texas Tech. Threw for 104 yards on 9-of-17 passing with two touchdowns.

Urell Johnson

Defensive back, junior, 5-10/177

2013: Johnson, who transferred to Southern Miss in 2012, has played in four games this year and recorded seven total tackles.

2012: Sat out due to NCAA Transfer rules.

2011: Member of Texas Tech’s scout team in 2011 after redshirting in 2010.

Scotty Young

Quarterback, junior, 6-2/221

2013: Young has struggled in his first season playing for Louisiana Tech, throwing for just 653 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in only six games.

2012: Sat out due to the NCAA transfer rules. Member of the scout squad.

2011: Did not play as a sophomore at Texas Tech after redshirting in 2010.
