The news came down the wire late Sunday afternoon. Thanks to the Big 12 placing two teams in the BCS, Texas Tech (7-5) is headed to San Diego and the Holiday Bowl on December 30 to face Pac-12 South champ, Arizona State (10-3).

Here’s how Tech players reacted to the news on Twitter:

Patrick Mahomes, who committed to Tech back in April, isn’t a Red Raider yet, but we’ll claim him. Former Tech linebacker Bront Bird, who graduated in 2010, currently plays for the San Diego Chargers.

Tech heads to their first out-of-state bowl game appearance since 2007 when they beat Virginia in a wild Gator Bowl. Arizona State, coming off a loss in the Pac-12 title game to Stanford, is a much tougher opponent than what Tech may have drawn in the Texas Bowl, but no doubt everyone involved is more excited about San Diego than another trip to Houston.

Surprised and probably better than what we deserved but hey, we’ll take it. Tech’s fan base and style of play probably influenced the decision. Better lace’em up tight. The Sun Devils can play.

It’s a win-win situation for this team and it feels like the excitement is starting to come back.

Really glad to hear that. Hard to get a feel for the emotional state of Raiderland from here. Raider Red back in the championship so that’s a good sign.
