Red Raider softball kicks off 2014 campaign

The Texas Tech softball team kicked off its 2014 campaign with a 5 game appearance at the Lion Classic in Hammond, Louisiana. The Red Raiders had their Thursday Night opener cancelled due to weather and instead opened their season with a tight 4-3 loss to Akron. It was Techs first loss to begin a season since 2008, and coach Shanon Hays first loss to begin a season with the Red Raiders, as he had previously been 4-0. Tech battled back to finish the weekend 3-2, winning their last two games by a combined score of 15-5.

The Red Raider pitching staff was led by Senior Brittany Talley, who struck out 11 batters in 11.1 innings of work while only allowing 6 hits and 0 runs. She was helped out in relief by Sophomore Gretchen Aucoin, who allowed only 2 hits over 5 1/3 innings for the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech will continue their road trip this weekend in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the Troy Cox Classic, where they will face Northern Colorado, Weber State(twice), A&M-Corpus Christi, and host New Mexico State. The Red Raiders won’t host a home game until the first weekend in March when they will welcome Abilene Christian, Southern, and Sam Houston State to The Rock for the Texas Tech Invitational.
