One of the most consistent programs in the Texas Tech athletic department in the last decade has been the men’s golf team. Head coach Greg Sands has helped guide the Red Raiders to 13 consecutive NCAA postseason trips.
This year, Sands and the Red Raiders are headed to Raleigh, North Carolina to compete in a regional hosted by the North Carolina State Wolfpack.
Tech will be the No. 7 seed in the Raleigh regional and will compete against 11 other teams including Georgia Tech, Washington, Florida State, Texas A&M, Mercer, Kentucky, Wake Forest, South Alabama, Memphis, Minnesota, Rice and Bethune-Cookman.
The regional is held at the Lonnie Pool Golf Course, a par 71 course located within Raleigh’s city limits.
Tech’s five participating starters include juniors Clement Sordet, Matias Dominguez, Esteban Restrepo, Henry Todd and freshman Hannes Ronneblad.
In order for the Red Raiders to advance, they must place in the top five of the 12 team field.
On Thursday, the Red Raiders posted a strong three under as a team before play halted due to weather conditions. This is good for tied for fourth place through the 14th hole. Play will resume tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. and the second round will start approximately 30 minutes after the first round ends.
