Devin West has been hired on as assistant coach for women’s sprints and hurdles for Texas Tech. West comes to Lubbock from University of Miami and Florida State University, where his programs have excelled in NCAA competition, and where he has been known as a top flight recruiter.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to be at Texas Tech,” West said. “The tradition, the program and being in the state of Texas – which is a recruiting hotbed – is exciting. I’m grateful for the opportunity from Coach Kittley to be part of his staff. I look forward to winning championships and taking this program to another level. I’d be remiss to not thank coach Amy Deem and the University of Miami for allowing me to be part of such a great program with exceptional student-athletes and coaches.”
Sophomore first baseman Eric Gutierrez destroyed the previously held HR Derby record in Omaha, NE, yesterday. More than doubling the previous record (20), Gutierrez finished runner-up in the derby. He hit 18 in the final round, while the freshman catcher from Texas, Tres Barrera, hit 25 to win.
“It was a crazy night,” Gutierrez said following the event. “Having the opportunity to come back to Omaha, especially with my Dad throwing to me, was just incredible. It was also a special experience to be there in the finals with Tres (Barrera) – being able to represent the Big 12 Conference and Sharyland High School with him was great. It felt like old times back in high school when we would take batting practice together. Overall, it was just an amazing night.”
Go Big 12!
