Lost in all the shuffle surrounding Nigel Bethel II’s reinstatement this afternoon was quarterback Davis Webb being named to a preseason watch list as a true sophomore.
The Davey O’Brien Award, which goes to the nation’s top quarterback each year, just announced its 2014 watch list, a group of 39 of the best passers in college football.
Quarterbacks from all 125 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed to 16 semifinalists on Monday, Nov. 3. The Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce three finalists on Monday, Nov. 24. The 2014 Davey O’Brien winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 11.
Webb is one of just seven sophomores named to this year’s preseason watch list, including last year’s O’Brien and Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston of the national champion Florida State Seminoles.
In his second year as a Red Raider, Webb is coming off a true freshman season where he threw for over 2,700 yards and 15 touchdowns while splitting starts with fellow freshman Baker Mayfield, now at Oklahoma. As the full-time starter this year under the tutelage of Kliff Kingsbury, we can expect a big season and possible run at the Davy O’Brien Award.
