UPDATED: Tech releases police report on Bethel-Battle altercation (VIDEO)

We now have a better idea of what happened between Amber Battle and Nigel Bethel II.

The police report from the incident, released Wednesday morning, shed new light on the much-talked-about June 28 altercation between the two Texas Tech athletes.

Bethel told police the two were playing physically all game, including him fouling her multiple times. Before he hit Battle, he felt someone punch him in the back of the head.

“Bethel stated out of natural reaction he turned immediately and swing his closed right fist,” the report reads. “He advised he did not realize it was Battle behind him until he had already struck her in the face.”

Battle told police she did not know who Bethel was when they were playing, but he was “playing her very aggressively,” according to the report. He fouled her several times, including knocking her out of bounds, and she played physical against him. At that point, she told the Texas Tech police officer, she walked up behind him and he turned and hit her on the left side of her face.

Witnesses told police that Battle was playing aggressively with other players, that football players were teasing Bethel about playing against Battle, that Bethel played aggressively against Battle and fouled her repeatedly and that at one point Bethel fell down and Battle “was staring him down.” A witness also told police he saw Battle hit Bethel in the back of the head as Bethel was walking away, immediately prior to Bethel punching Battle.
