Throwback Thursday: Texas Tech Drops 70 on TCU

Weeks before their historic beatdown of Nebraska in Lubbock, Texas Tech and Sonny Cumbie dropped 70 points on TCU and Gary Patterson’s defense.

It took a while for the Red Raiders to find their usual offensive mojo, and they failed to score on their first seven drives, falling behind 21-0. But Tech would knot it up a 21-all just before half-time, and ultimately scored 56-straight points to beat the Frogs 70-35.

Then Red Raider quarterback and current TCU co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie completed 30 of 50 passes for 441 yards and four touchdowns, half of which went to Jarrett Hicks, who caught eight passes for 211 yards and a touchdown in the rout, his third-straight game of 150 yards or more.. Other notable performers include Tech running back Taurean Henderson, who scored three rushing touchdowns.

It was the Horned Frogs’ first visit to Lubbock since 1995, when they lost 27-6. At the time both teams were members of the Southwest Conference before TCU joined Conference USA and Tech became a member of the Big 12. Thankfully, this rivalry lives again in the 2014 version of the Big 12.

Texas Tech’s next matchup with TCU will take place Oct. 25 at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth.
