The Linebacker position group arguably requires the most versatility of any position group in football. A solid corps of Linebackers can be instrumental in stopping a good rushing attack, helping in pass defense by dropping back in zone and/or man coverage, and is usually a team’s first line of defense against an athletic dual-threat quarterback.

For the 2015 season, the Big 12 Conference will have very few stalwart linebacker units, as many teams are rebuilding at the position. To combat that, many teams may turn to the underclassmen to come in and make a big difference.
