It’s hard to overstate just how impressive Michael Crabtree was for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. As we continue to look through the Texas Tech football record book, it’s impossible to overlook all that Crabtree accomplished for the Red Raiders.
And that definitely includes the magnificent performances he put on for Texas Tech during the 2007 season.
In what was one of the most exciting passing offenses college football has had the pleasure of seeing, Crabtree thrived. He absolutely put up incredible numbers in Mike Leach’s Air Raid offense on a very regular basis.
So much so that he’s still the holder of the single season passing record for the Texas Tech football program. His 2007 season was remarkable and he just about doubled the number of yards necessary for us to be talking about all of the 1000 yards receiving seasons.
Seriously. Crabtree was just 38 yards away from having 2000 receiving yards in 2007.
Texas Tech football history: Michael Crabtree exploded for nearly 2000 receiving yards for the Red Raiders in 2007
Looking through all of the games that Crabtree played in back in 2007, you’ll see that he had just two games where he didn’t record at least 100 receiving yards. That’s pretty dang impressive.
The season started with 12 catches for 106 yards and three touchdowns against the SMU Mustangs. A week later, against UTEP, Crabtree caught 15 passes for 188 yards and two more scores. Then against the Rice Owls, Crabtree managed to put together an 11 catch, 244 yard performance that paired nicely with three touchdowns.
Crabtree also had a 14 reception, 237 yard, three touchdown game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater, Oklahoma. I mean, the dude caught a lot of passes and scored a lot of touchdowns. Take the game on the road in Austin against the Texas Longhorns, for example. In that matchup, Crabtree had nine catches for 195 yards and two touchdowns.
In total, throughout the season, Crabtree had 134 receptions for 1962 yards and 22 touchdown catches. Truly incredible stuff.
