Roundtable: Will Texas Tech Win Another Game?

facebooktwitterreddit

It’s been a rough week for Texas Tech football, on and off the field. During such bleak times many fans simply ask, ‘will we win another game this year?’

That’s not an easy question to answer, especially after the coaching staff changes yesterday. This team has as much potential as any on offense, but they’ve underwhelmed so far. The defense seems to be as bad as ever, but they may have reason to rally now.

However, the only important question remains, will the Red Raiders win any more games in 2014?

I don’t see any guaranteed wins on the schedule any more, but I also don’t see any guaranteed losses outside of Baylor. Tech hasn’t beaten Oklahoma St. since 2008, but this is the worst Pokes team since 2008. Kansas St. is tough, but not invincible. West Virginia and TCU, though improved, haven’t beaten Tech as Big 12 teams, Oklahoma always has trouble winning in Lubbock and Texas is very beatable (again) this year.

But that doesn’t mean the Red Raiders beat any of those teams and if they continue to play like they did against Arkansas they probably don’t beat Iowa State, either.

Based on what I’ve seen, I’ll say they beat West Virginia and Kansas, finishing the year at 4-8. But again, it’s still really up in the air. Davis Webb could turn into that quarterback we expected him to be and the Red Raiders could make a bowl.

I certainly expect this team to improve from here on out. I think they’re really young, and they’re a very mistake prone team, but the offense has a ton of upside to outscore opponents. It’s tough to tell how many they will win from here on out. Bashing this team, and especially the defense seems to be the cool thing to do right now, but I don’t think they will miss out on a bowl unless we see a ton of injuries like we did in 2011.

I won’t believe they can beat Texas until I see it with my own two eyes, because it hasn’t happened in almost six years and Tech seems to be at their worst when they play the Burnt Orange. If I have to guess, I think they beat Kansas, Iowa State, upset Oklahoma State and shock Oklahoma at home. Baylor just has too much firepower, and road games against TCU and KSU seem like a very tall task. The West Virginia game at home decides if this team is 6-6 or 7-5.

Who knows how Tech’s defense will respond after the “resignation” of Matt Wallerstedt. I don’t expect to see the same kind of turnaround we saw in 2007 when Ruffin McNeill took over mid-season. Tech won’t see a rushing attack as good as Arkansas the rest of the year, but a lot of yards will still be given up in Big 12 play.

They’ll beat Kansas and I expect them to get one upset; my best guess would be a win at TCU, if you can call that an upset. Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Texas and Baylor will run all over the Red Raiders. I see a 4-8 finish and 5-7 at best.

The rest of the season is really up in he air. I’m anxious to see how the team reacts to adversity with the resignation of Coach Wallerstedt. Every week will be a struggle because there is no consistency on either side of the ball, and if there are four more wins on the schedule I see them coming from Kansas, West Virginia, Iowa State, and one upset game. I’d say Tech beats either TCU or OU.

I don’t think you’ll see a 2007 Ruffin McNeill-esque turnaround either, but they should be better (they can’t be any worse!) than the past few weeks. The only gimme game on the schedule will be Kansas, and if they don’t step it up defensively it will be very tough to beat TCU, WVU or Iowa State, much less anyone else in the conference.

This will be the most up-in-the-air team I will have seen during my time in Lubbock. I think we at least manage five wins, but I’m hoping for six. I definitely think West Virginia and Kansas, but I think they’ll manage to upset someone (like every year) and the other teams are up in the air. Baylor will be an ugly game.

Texas Tech’s defense will step it up and I have full faith in Coach Smith. He’s been mentioning adding more tackling to practice, which is one thing that Tech really needs to work on. I think the coaching change is a good thing that will benefit the team.
