Sports are of varying importance to people across the world. Some people loathe athletic competition, even competition in which they are not forced to participate. While the daily sanity of others is dependent on the outcomes of athletic competitions, even those in which they are not allowed to participate.

Everyone falls somewhere on the spectrum, but there is no denying that college sports fans are the most passionate and, some will say, ridiculous in America. Whether it is Alabama Crimson Tide fan Harvey Updike killing the famous trees at Toomer’s Corner (who does that?!) just to spite his school’s rival, the Auburn Tigers; or Duke students chanting “Where’s your grandma?” at N.C. State basketball player Tyler Lewis just days after his grandmother’s passing; to tearing down goal posts and showing them to your rival’s fans who refuse to leave your stadium after being shutout, college fans often resemble the spectators in the Roman Coliseum lusting for their bowl of blood.

For as long as most Texas Tech Red Raider fans can remember, we have been accused of being ignorant violent outlaws who live so far out on the west Texas plains that we have lost all good sense. And we’ve come to not only embrace the fact that many around the nation think we are crazy, we gladly agree with the notion.

And so, I present part one in a two-part series in which we analyze what makes Tech fans unlike any other fan base in the nation. If any of the following statements apply to you, then you are a true Red Raider fan, and likely have the scars to prove it.
