No. 8 Joe Barnes

The 1973 season was one of the best in Texas Tech football history. Quarterback Joe Barnes led the Red Raiders to an 11-1 record and a victory in the Gator Bowl. The team’s final ranking of 11th in the nation remains one of the highest final rankings in program history.

In two years as a starter, Barnes led Texas Tech to 19 wins and two bowl appearances. He finished his career with 2,330 yards passing, 1,335 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns.

The 1986 inductee into the Texas Tech Hall of Honor had a successful 11-year career in the Canadian Football League being named an all-star in 1984.

The video below shows great classic footage of Barnes and his team in the Gator Bowl.
