Louis Vasquez becomes 16th Texas Tech football player to win a Super Bowl
Last night the world watched the Denver Broncos win Super Bowl 50 over the Carolina Panthers 24-10. The game marked the third consecutive year at least one former Texas Tech football player appeared in Super Bowl and Denver’s win means that for the second year in a row, a Texas Tech football alum is a Super Bowl champion.
Texas Tech has had a long connection with the world’s biggest single-day sporting event. The first four Super Bowls ever played included Red Raiders and over half of the 50 Super Bowls have featured a former Texas Tech football player.
Texas Tech has had 30 roster appearances in the Super Bowl with teams featuring former Texas Tech football players going 15-11 in the big game. So in honor of last night’s game, here is a list of notable Texas Tech Red Raiders who have won a Super Bowl title.
Super Bowl L – Louis Vasquez
The seventh-year NFL guard is the latest Texas Tech football alum to hoist the Lombardi Trophy after helping Denver defeat Carolina last night in Santa Clara, California.
Vasquez’ journey has taken him from Corsicana, Texas (population 23,000) to the sporting world’s grandest stage on two occasions. He also appeared in Super Bowl XLVIII with Denver.

The 6-foot-4, 335-pound Texas Tech alum was a key member of the 2008 Red Raider offensive line that helped protect record-setting quarterback Graham Harrell as the team achieved the highest ranking in school history spending two weeks at No. 2 in the nation.
After being drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2009, Vasquez signed with Denver in 2013 helping the team win the AFC title and earning a Pro Bowl selection in the process. This year, Vasquez played in all 19 Denver games starting 18 including the Super Bowl.
