The Texas Tech baseball team continued its strong play last night by knocking off Ohio State on the road.

With the Texas Tech baseball team coming off an emotional  Big 12 series win over then No. 2 TCU last weekend, some may have expected a letdown.  However, on TuesdayTim Tadlock’s team took care of business with a 5-3 victory over unranked Ohio State in Columbus.

The win moved Tech to 37-12 overall, a mark that includes a 12-2 record in non-conference mid-week games.  While those victories obviously do not help the Red Raiders pursuit of a second-consecutive Big 12 title, they do enhance the team’s chances of earning a national seed in the NCAA Tournament.  National seeds are guaranteed to host both rounds of the tournament prior to the College World Series provided they advance.

Wednesday’s game came after game one of the series was cancelled due to inclement weather. But not even Mother Nature could cool of Texas Tech.  And fortunately, Tech’s hottest hitter remained in the groove.

Infielder Hunter Hargrove went 2 for 3 and scored two runs against the Buckeyes.  Last week, against TCU and New Mexico, Hargrove was  9 for 18 with six RBI and six runs scored en-route to earning Big 12 Player of the Week honors.

On the mound, six Red Raiders combined to keep the Ohio State backs at bay.  Junior Jose Quezada picked up the win in relief and Parker Mushiinski recorded his third save of the season. Mushinski’s strikeout of Tre’ Grant to end the 8th inning quelled a Buckeye rally with a runner at third base.

With only two Big 12 series remaining (at West Virginia and versus Kansas) Texas Tech is one game behind the Horned Frogs for first place.  The Frogs have two tough series left on the conference slate (home versus Texas and at Oklahoma) so the Red Raiders are still very much alive for the regular season crown.

However, this year’s Texas Tech baseball team has its sights set on a prize much larger than a conference title.  Taking care of business in a tough mid-week game against Ohio State was another step towards accomplishing that goal.
