The Texas Tech baseball team swept the Kansas Jayhawks this weekend to become Big 12 Champions for the second consecutive year.

The Texas Tech baseball team came out to Rip Griffin Park Thursday night with high hopes for the weekend. They needed to sweep the series against unranked Kansas in order to become the Big 12 conference champions for a second year in a row.

Thursday nights game one was a fun game to watch for any baseball fan. Despite just a 29-24 record, the Jayhawks were not coming into Lubbock to lay down and let the Red Raiders bring the brooms out with ease. Kansas started the game with a quick 3-1 lead in the second inning, but with some impressive pitching the rest of the way from Texas Tech LHP, Steven Gingery, the Red Raiders were not out of it at any point in the game.

Although, it was not just the Golden Spikes Award hopeful who took care of business on the defensive side of the ball. Center fielder, Cody Farhat and first basemen, Hunter Hargrove found themselves on the highlight reel with some acrobatic catches that kept the Red Raiders in the game as well.

With Kansas holding onto a 6-4 lead in the bottom half of the 6th inning, the Red Raiders were looking for the bats to come alive. Tanner Gardner stepped into the batters box with a runner on second and no outs looking to replicate the same AB he had earlier in the game which resulted in his first HR of the season. This time, he decided to make things more interesting for the home crowd and belted his second HR over the right field wall with two strikes on him, giving the Red Raiders the late lead they needed. Texas Tech was able to tack on four more runs throughout the game and hold the Jayhawks to just six runs total, giving the Red Raiders their 40th win of the season.

Friday’s Game two was a pretty regular day at the ballpark for the Red Raiders. By the fifth inning the Raiders’ line-up opened it up, which was sparked by a oppo-taco shot by Josh Jung, driving in three runs and giving Tech a 5-1 lead. An impressive performance by RHP, Ryan Shetter resulted in a final line: 7.0 IP, 3H,1R, 0BB,11K, allowed the Tech lineup to have the confidence at the plate they needed. Tech took game two with a final score of 16-4.

Saturday/Senior Day/Sweep Day was another energized game day in Lubbock. The player of the game, Grant Little, was able to produce a 3-5 day with three big doubles that gave Tech the advantage. The Texas Tech pitching staff came out ready to play as well, with help from Erikson Lanning, Jose Quezada, and Dylan Dusek, the Jayhawks only scratched four runs across the plate and gave Tech the glorious 9-4 win they needed.

With the sweep over the weekend, Texas Tech earned their 42nd win of the season and solidified the number one seed in this weeks upcoming Big 12 tournament as well as their second consecutive Big 12 regular season CHAMPIONSHIP.

Texas Tech is now looking forward to Wednesday when they face Oklahoma State in the first round of the Phillips 66 Big 12 tournament in Oklahoma City.
