The Texas Tech football coaches are piling up the verbal commits this week including one from athlete Jabari James.  Here is a scouting report on the newest Red Raider offensive recruit.

Kliff Kingsbury knows where his bread is buttered, on the offensive side of the ball.  So it is no surprise that the Texas Tech football head coach continues to add weapons to his “Air Raid” attack.  On Thursday, Missouri City, Texas athlete Jabari James became the latest high school prospect to verbally pledge to be part of Kingsbury’s explosive offense.

James selected Texas Tech over Grambling State, Lamar and Tulsa.  One reason for the relatively light interest from major programs could be the fact that he has been his team’s primary quarterback, yet he does not project as a QB at the next level.  Last season he threw for 1,385 yards and 20 touchdowns plus he ran for an additional 1,082 yards and 18 touchdowns.

However, his future at Texas Tech is at receiver.  The 6-foot 170-pound James fits the mold of an inside receiver.  In fact, he is almost the exact same size as Xavier Martin, who was recruited as a quarterback last year but was recently moved to inside receiver  by Kingsbury.

Scouting James as a receiver is tough because he is exclusively a quarterback in his highlight video.  However, the video does show what he is capable of doing with the ball in his hands.

Jabari James is the 8th player to commit to Texas Tech for 2018 and the third this week.  Keep Checking in with “Wreck ‘Em Red” for all the latest developments on the recruiting trail.

Jabari James is a shifty athlete.  He has loose hips and above average agility that allows him to make defenders miss in space.

Also, he has excellent straight-line speed.  He is seldom caught from behind by defenders in his highlights so he is a threat to take the ball to the end zone on virtually any play.

What is unknown is how well he will perform without the ball in his hands.  He will likely have to work on his ability to run routes and get open.  Likewise, he will have to learn how to block which is something he is not accustomed to doing as a quarterback.

However, contact is not foreign to him.  He also plays defensive back in addition to quarterback so he should not be afraid to mix it up.

Fortunately for James, there is no pressure on him to play right away.  There is plenty of depth ahead of him with Keke Coutee, De’Quan Bowman and Xavier Martin all set to be on campus next year meaning he is likely to redshirt while he learns a new position.
