The football season is in full swing and no where is that more true than in the high school football ranks.  Let’s take a look at how some of current Texas Tech football verbal recruits are faring on the young season.

Though we are only in the middle of September, the Texas Tech football program has the majority of its 2018 recruiting class in place.  With 20 players on boardTech currently has the No. 49-ranked class in the country according to 247sports.com.

The first player most fans will want to track this fall is Grapevine quarterback Alan Bowman.  The 6-foot-3 pocket passer committed to Texas Tech in June and is ranked as the No. 88 player in Texas.

In 2017, Bowman has led Grapevine to a 1-1 record.  Thus far, his statistics have been a bit modest.  He is 36-58 passing for 404 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions on the young season.

Bowman opened the season with 154 yards and a touchdown in a win over Azle.  The blowout win meant that he was not asked for too many heroics on the night keeping his statistics in check.

In week two, Grapevine fell in a shootout to Abilene Cooper 41-37.  In the loss, Bowman was steady going 18-26 (69%) for 250 yards and two touchdowns.

While Texas Tech’s quarterback recruit is off to a steady start, one of the receivers in the 2018 class has exploded out of the gate.

More from Wreck'Em Red

Denton Ryan wide receiver Gabriel Douglas has 257 yards receiving on 19 receptions in two games.  More importantly, he has already found the end zone five times.

Douglas is the only 4-star recruit in the Texas Tech class.  He committed to Tech almost a year ago, in October of 2016.  Due to the fact that he committed so early in the recruiting cycle, he holds only one other offer, from Indiana.  However, if he continues to perform at a high level for Ryan, he will certainly hear from other programs hoping to flip him.

Fortunately for Texas Tech, Douglas is not the only 2018 recruit dominating the competition in 2017.  Covington, Louisiana running back Devin Brumfield is re-writing his school’s record books.

Already Covington’s all-time rushing yards leader after his junior year, Brumfield now co-owns the school rushing touchdown mark after a huge opening week.  In a 69-32 win over Franklinton, he reached the end zone four times in three quarters of action to tie the school record of 56.  On the night, he also racked up 233 yards on just 17 carries.  That is good for a ridiculous 13 yards-per-carry.

Week two saw Brumfield limited to just 35 yards in a 6-0 win over Holy Cross.  He did not score a touchdown meaning he will have to wait until this weekend to break the school mark.

Finally, Texas Tech fans should be encouraged by the play of Lake Highlands wide receiver Corey Fulcher.  The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder has caught 7 passes for 76 yards and touchdown.  What’s more, he has rushed for 209 yards and six touchdowns on just 23 carries.

He is proving to be a versatile weapon that the Wildcats are trying to feed the ball to as often as possible.  The fact that he has been a bigger force as a runner than receiver may be due to the mediocre play of the Lake Highlands quarterback who is completing just 56% of his passes this season.  Thus, it makes sense for the coaching staff to find easy ways to get the ball to him so handing it off is about as simple as can be.

The 2018 singing class is the first to be eligible to sign their letters of intent early.  Prospects can officially sign with schools beginning December 20th of this year.  Of course, Wreck ‘Em Red will have full coverage when these prospects put pen to paper and officially become Red Raiders.
