The Texas Tech baseball team had an impressive sweep of Kansas State over the weekend during which it set numerous school records at the plate.

The Texas Tech football team is not the only squad on campus known for wearing out scoreboards.    Tim Tadlock’s Red Raider baseball team has long been one of the most prolific offensive teams in the conference but what it did against Kansas State this weekend was historic.

During the three-game home sweep, Texas Tech scored 56 runs including games of 21 and 26 runs in the first two contests.  It was the most runs ever scored in one series by a Texas Tech baseball team.

Any time a team averages 18.6 runs per game over an entire series, there are going to be numerous offensive stars and that was the case for the Red Raiders.  The middle of the Texas Tech offense was lethal against the Wildcats as noted by Texas Tech baseball radio analyst Jamie Lent.

The record-setting weekend began with a 21-4 win on Friday night.  Sophomore outfielder Grant Little tied the Texas Tech record for RBI in a game with 9.  He went 4-5 with two homers on a night when the howling west Texas wind made conditions right for offense.

Saturday, the Texas Tech bats stayed hot. In a 26-6 blowout, the Red Raiders set a school record for runs in a single Big 12 game.

Senior Michael Davis came just a triple shy of the cycle while racking up five hits and driving in five runs.  Texas Tech scored at least one run in the first seven innings including a nine-run 3rd.

Sunday, Texas Tech had an off day at the plate putting up a meager nine runs in a 9-6 win.  Cody Farhat had the go-ahead 3-run homer in the 4th while Cam Warren added a two-run long ball in the 7th.  It was Warren’s second homer of the series following a grand slam in Saturday’s game.

This weekend’s offensive onslaught continued an impressive offensive season for Texas Tech.  Thus far, the Red Raiders are scoring 8.8 runs per game (9.0 per game in Big 12 play). Eight of the team’s regular starters are hitting over .300 and the team has scored at least ten runs fifteen times while plating at least 20 runs in four separate games.

As a team, Texas Tech leads the Big 12 with a .316 average and its 327 runs on the season are 77 more than the next best team, OU.  Texas Tech also leads the Big 12 in home runs (50), on-base percentage (.438), slugging percentage (.521) and has three players (Grant Little, Josh Jung and Gabe Holt) ranked in the top ten in the league in batting average.

The spring winds have always made Dan Law Field a hitter’s park but the offense the 2018 team is putting up is historic.  Texas Tech is currently fourth in the Big 12 standings but has home series with first place Oklahoma and third place Texas in the near future.  If the Red Raider offense stays as hot as it has been lately, especially at home, the team could very well bring home a third-consecutive Big 12 regular season crown.
