Texas Tech has offered a scholarship to Katy, Texas linebacker David Gbenda, one of the top defensive players in the state.

One of the biggest changes in the Texas Tech defense during defensive coordinator David Gibbs’ tenure has been the remaking of the team’s linebacking corps.  What was annually considered the weakest position on the defense has been transformed to perhaps the strongest position group on the roster with the addition of players like Dakota Allen, Jordyn Brooks and Riko Jeffers.

Now, Gibbs is looking to continue to add star linebackers to his defense by offering a scholarship to one of the top players in Texas.  4-star prospect David Gbenda of Katy, Texas reported this week that he has received an offer from Texas Tech.

The 6-foot-0, 212-pounder is rated a 4-star prospect by 247Sports.com and is the No. 43 player in Texas.  So as one might expect, his list of interested schools is loaded with big time programs.

In addition to Texas Tech, Gbenda has offers from over 20 schools including Texas A&M, Michigan, TCU, Texas, Arkansas, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Ole Miss and Utah.

"“I am thankful for each and every one of them,” Gbenda said. “The fact that each one of them offered me a scholarship is just a blessing from God. Right now I am just looking forward to seeing some big schools.”"

The recruiting process has really skyrocketed for Gbenda since he was named the MVP at The Opening recruiting event in Houston in February.  Since then, he’s not made any public statements about his favorites but he did visit Texas for their junior day.

Additionally, he was in attendance for the Texas A&M spring game and has indicated he plans to take an official visit to the school.  Right now, it appears that the Aggies and the Horns are the early leaders for the talented LB but there is a long way to go as he said he was not sure if he will sign in December’s early signing period or wait until February.

As a junior, Gbenda had 56 tackles and two sacks in one of the most competitive districts in the state.  His size would suggest that he might be best suited to play outside linebacker at college where he can rush the passer.  He might also be a better fit in a 3-4 defense rather than a 4-3 as David Gibbs’ employs.  Still, adding player of his talent would be a boost to any defense.

Texas Tech already has one top pass-rusher, Steven Parker of Dallas, Texas, verbally committed to the 2019 class.  Parker is a 4-star recruit who, at 220-pounds, looks to be a defensive end at the college level but some recruiting sites list him as an outside LB like Gbenda.
