Five Red Raiders That Could Be Drafted In 2019
Safety Jah’Shawn Johnson
It may feel like Jah’Shawn Johnson has been at Texas Tech for a decade but after this year, he will be out of eligibility. If it feels like he’s been around since the Leach era, it would be because he has been a stellar player since his freshman season.
The Ennis, Texas native has been the leader of the Texas Tech secondary averaging 86 tackles per season. Last year, Johnson had a career-best 97 tackles to go along with five pass defenses and a forced fumble.
During his career, Johnson has become known for making big plays at critical moments. He has intercepted five passes, returning one for a touchdown while recovering six fumbles.
Johnson is an instinctual player that can be counted on to anchor a secondary by making calls and putting himself and his teammates in the proper position. He is fearless and has shown the ability to be a great tackler despite weighing only 185 pounds.
But it is his slight frame that could hurt Johnson when scouts evaluate him for the draft. Safeties at his size almost never get a shot in the NFL because teams fear they will not be able to stop the run game on Sundays or withstand the week-to-week brutality of the NFL.
Johnson will have to prove to be versatile in order to earn a shot in the NFL. He will have to be a special teams ace and he could even have to show that he can play corner due to his size.
If he can put on ten pounds or more in the next year, Johnson could be a quality NFL Draft prospect that will get his shot in the NFL.
