Notable Red Raiders Drafted In Rounds 2-3 of NFL Draft
Bam Morris 1994 – Round 3
Byron “Bam” Morris was taken with the 91st pick in the 1994 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 1993 Doak Walker Award winner went on to a seven-year NFL Career playing for the Steelers, Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Bears.
In all, he ran for 3,809 yards and 35 touchdowns. Additionally, he caught 103 passes for 790 yards and a score.
Perhaps Bam Morris’ best career game came in Super Bowl XXX. He was the game’s leading rusher with 79 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries in a losing effort for the Steelers.
While at Texas Tech, Morris became a fan favorite thanks to his bruising style of play. He ranks fourth in program history with 3,544 career yards and third in program history with 37 rushing touchdowns.
Morris also has the second and ninth-best single-season rushing seasons in program history (1993 and 1992). But while Morris was a fantastic player on the field for Texas Tech and in the NFL, he might best be remembered for off-field concerns that derailed his career.
In 1996, he pleaded guilty for felony marijuana possession in Rockwall, Texas. During that same arrest, police also found an ounce of cocaine on him and as a result he was cut by the Steelers.
He was picked up by Baltimore but was suspended twice in two years by the NFL for a violation of the substance abuse policy leading to his release by the Ravens.
Then, in 2000, Morris was sentenced to 30 moths of prison and a federal drug trafficking conviction. In 2001, he was found guilty of violating his parole and was sentenced to ten years in prison. He was released in 2004.
