4-star Texas Tech basketball target Both Gach is set to announce his college decision Friday and Texas Tech is one of the favorites.

The 2018 Texas Tech basketball class could take a major step forward Friday when coveted 4-star forward Both Gach announces where he will play next season.   The Arizona product is one of the top remaining prospects in the 2018 class and would be a huge get for Chris Beard.

Gach is set to chose between Texas Tech, San Diego State and Utah after taking official visits to all three.  Texas Tech and Utah are Gach’s only Power 5 offers as the 6-foot-7 versatile forward was a bit of a late bloomer on the recruiting circuit.

A well-rounded player with nice court vision, the length to guard multiple positions and an ability to hit from outside, the native of Minnesota could fit perfectly into Chris Beard’s motion offense.  In his attempt to find “position-less” players, Beard has recruited a number of players like Gach who can do just a little bit of everything on the court (a-la Zhaire Smith and Jarrett Culver).

"“My strength is I’m a playmaker for my teammates,” Gach said recently. “I can do a little bit of everything. I can score, get rebounds and get assists. I think I can have a good handle and can play about any position, and I have length I use on defense.”More from Wreck'Em RedTexas Tech football: Red Raider fans need to know about these MountaineersTexas Tech football: Red Raiders land first commit for class of 2025Texas Tech football: Why have the Red Raiders struggled on the road under McGuire?Texas Tech football: Why the Red Raiders can compete for a Big 12 titleTexas Tech football: Plenty of questions remain as conference play arrives"

Though he is now a four-star prospect, Gach was not heavily recruited until his recent performances at April tournaments.  As a junior in Minnesota, he averaged 18.6 points per game and that output increased to 20 PPG this year for Arizona Compass Prep.

As for Texas Tech’s competition in the recruitment of Gach, both schools have quite a bit to offer.  Utah is coming off a season 23-12 season and an appearance in the NIT title game.  In seven years under head coach Larry Krystkowiak, the Utes have been in the postseason five times including reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2015 and second round in 2016.

Meanwhile, SDSU won the Mountain West Conference Tournament last season before falling to Houston in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.  The Aztecs have been part of the “big dance” in six of the past eight seasons reaching the Sweet 16 in 2011 and 2014.

Should Gach decide to come to Texas Tech, he would be the latest in a wave significant offseason additions.  Texas Tech has signed 4-star high school forward Khavon Moore and 3-star guard Kyler Edwards while welcoming graduate transfers Tariq Owens, a center from St. John’s and Matt Mooney, a guard from South Dakota.  JUCO guard Deshawn Corprew is also set to transfer to Texas Tech from South Plains Junior College for next season meaning there will be plenty of new faces on Chris Beard’s bench.  Now we wait to see if Both Gach will be one of them as well.
