This week, the Texas Tech football program has received four verbal commitments from 2019 prospects giving a much-needed boost to the current recruiting class.

It appears that the Texas Tech football recruiting drought is over and that the monsoon season is upon us.  After not adding one high school prospect to the 2019 signing class since October, Kliff Kingsbury has tripled the size of the current class in one week.

Following last weekend when numerous recruiting targets were on campus for official visits, Texas Tech has added four verbal commitments.  That haul has seen the 2019 class expand from just two players to six and has helped to assuage some fears growing within the fan base about Kingsbury’s ability to recruit players given the perception (correct or not) that his job is in jeopardy this season.

The good news began on Monday when Sachse, Texas linebacker Bryce Robinson committed to Texas Tech.  The former high school teammate of current Red Raider linebacker Riko Jeffers is a three-star prospect according to 247Sports.com but had no other Power 5 offers.

Robinson is rated as the No. 57 inside linebacker in America and the No. 195 recruit in the state of Texas.  The 6-foot, 232-pounder was a tackling machine last season amassing 115 stops forcing two fumbles, recovering a fumble and registering one sack. His addition to the class will help add depth at inside linebacker where Texas Tech will lose starting MLB Dakota Allen to graduation following this season.

On Wednesday, DeSoto, Texas wide receiver La’Vontae Shenault also pulled the trigger.  The 6-foot-1, 185-pound 3-star prospect chose Texas Tech over TCU, Oklahoma State West Virginia, Arizona State, Colorado, Kansas State, Utah and others.

Playing for one of the true powerhouse high school football programs in the nation, Shenault caught 60 passes for 791 yards and six touchdowns during his junior campaign. He is rated as a top 70 prospect in Texas and a top 70 wide receiver nationally.

Then, on Friday, antler pass-catcher was added to the class when Magnolia, Texas tight end Simon Gonzalez committed to the Red Raiders.  The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder is the first tight end landed by Kingsbury and the first true tight end to commit to Texas Tech since Jace Amaro in 2011.

The three-star recruit is a top 50 player nationally at his position and a top 150 player in the state. He chose Texas Tech over Arizona, Arizona State, Boise State, Virginia Tech and SMU among others.

Last year, he caught 28 passes for 600 yards (an impressive 21.5 yards per catch) and seven scores.  Gonzalez should be able to add a significant amount of muscle to his frame once he arrives on campus and he could provide the Red Raiders with a sill set not seen in Lubbock for several seasons.

But while all of the above commitments are significant, none are as big (literally and figuratively) as the one that came down early Saturday morning when one of the largest human beings on the planet joined the Texas Tech football recruiting class.

6-foot-11, 355-pound Trevor Roberson from Wellington, Texas (167 miles northeast of Lubbock in the Texas panhandle) has become the first offensive lineman added to the current class.  And what an addition he is.

His offer list includes the likes of Arkansas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, TCU and Southern Cal.  The three-star prospect is a top 50 offensive tackle in America and the No. 62 player in Texas.

Roberson has been in contact with the Texas Tech staff for several months and has made numerous visits to Lubbock and has long been a fan of the Red Raiders given their proximity to his home town.

This is a massive addition (pun intended) to the class because Roberson could be the future star of the offensive line early in his career.  Texas Tech currently has two juniors starting at the tackle positions  in Travis Bruffy and Terence Steele meaning that there could be an opportunity for Roberson to earn a starting spot in just his second year on campus.

This week’s windfall has helped boost the 2019 class ranking.  Texas Tech has jumped West Virginia for the seventh spot the Big 12  rankings staying ahead of Kansas, Kansas State while closing the gap on the middle of the pack which includes Baylor, Oklahoma State and Iowa State.

However, there is still plenty of work to do.  The current class is still without a quarterback, running back, defensive tackle or defensive back.  Plus, the staff will certainly want to add more players at offensive line, wide receiver, and defensive end (to pair with 4-star commit Stephen Parker from Dallas, Texas).

The first player to keep an eye on is San Angelo, Texas QB Maverick McIvor whose name reads like a tribute to 1980’s pop culture.  He has been on campus several times making Texas Tech the favorite for the 3-star player with offers from Arizona State, Boise State, North Carolina, Ole Miss and Washington State,

Another fantastic offensive line prospect linked to the Red Raiders is Carlsbad, NM tackle Taylor Miterko who was at the spring game and has been in for an unofficial visit this summer.  Though he has offers from Oklahoma State, Colorado, Arizona State, Baylor, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Oregon, TCU, Washington, and Washington State, Texas Tech is considered the front runner due in large part to the campus’ proximity to his hometown.

At the running back position, Amarillo, Texas prospect King Doerue is a name to keep an eye on.  The three-star prospect is a top target for Kingsbury.  Doerue is considering Minnesota, TCU, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Notre Dame and many other programs.
