Sunday, Trey Cleveland, a big wide receiver from Arlington, Texas committed to the Texas Tech football program continuing this week’s flood of commitments.

The 2019 Texas Tech football signing class is quickly rounding into form with a slew of verbal commitments in the past week.   The latest is wide receiver Trey Cleveland from Arlington, Texas who pledged to join the Red Raiders on Sunday.

Cleveland is a big target at 6-foot-3, 175-pounds.  He brought in 35 passes as a junior for 522 yards and six scores.

A bit of an unknown prospect, Cleveland attended a recent mini-camp in Lubbock where he impressed enough to earn an offer.  Currently, his only other offer is from Southern Illinois.

Though he is a bit of an under-the-radar prospect, Cleveland fits the physical profile of what Kliff Kingsbury is looking to add at outside receiver.  His tall and lanky frame is reminiscent of current Texas Tech wide receivers T.J. Vasher, Myllar Royals and Erik Ezukanma the later two of which are members of the 2018 signing class expected to play major roles as true freshmen this fall.

Only a few years ago, Kingsbury had to rely on smaller receivers on the outside like Reginald Davis and Devin Lauderdale.  Those smaller receivers struggled to consistently win one-on-one matchups against press coverage and they gave quarterbacks a smaller margin for error due to their limited catch radius.

But in the years since, there has been a premium on larger receivers bringing in larger targets like Dylan Cantrell, Derrick Willies and Donta Thompson.  Now, the Red Raider receiving corps is remade and full of talented players ready to contribute on the outside.

That is good news for Cleveland who could likely use a red shirt year to add weight to his slight frame.  However, his speed (he posted on Twitter that he ran a 4.4 second 40-yard dash during his workouts in Lubbock last weekend) makes him a player that could yield high dividends down the road.

Cleveland is the third 2019 wide receiver to commit to Texas Tech.  Last week, Desoto, Texas product La’Vontae Shenault decided to become a Red Raider while Cameron Cantrell (brother of Dylan Cantrell) did the same last October.
