The Texas Tech football program added a critical piece to its 2019 recruiting class Monday when San Angelo, Texas QB Maverick McIvor gave his verbal commitment to the Red Raiders.

Over the past week, the 2019 Texas Tech football recruiting class has quadrupled in size helping to quell fears and decrease complaints from a restless fan base that had seen no progress on the recruiting front for close to 300 days.  However, there was still one critical hole in the class, quarterback.

That is no longer the case after three-star San Angelo, Texas quarterback Maverick McIvor committed to the Red Raiders Monday.  The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder is the No. 18 dual-threat quarterback in the nation and No. 88 overall player in Texas according to 247sports.com.

McIvor was in Lubbock two weekends ago for an official visit but did not commit to the Red Raiders as he weighed his options.  It seems that he had narrowed his choices to Tech and North Carolina after he took unofficial ivists to both schools in June. In addition to the Red Raiders and Tar Heels, McIvor also had offers from Arizona State, Boise State, Colorado State, Iowa, Minnesota, Ole Miss and Washington State.

But in the end, the allure of playing close to home and being part of a high-powered offense was too much for McIvor to pass up.

"“The offense is a good fit for me. And Tech, in general, is just right down the road and I feel at home there. The coaches are awesome. The staff’s awesome. I loved everything about it.” He told the San Angelo Standard-Times."

Texas Tech was the only Big 12 school to offer McIvor a scholarship, due in part to the fact that he has only one season of experience at quarterback after playing receiver as a sophomore.  Last year, the first-time starting quarterback threw for 3,372 yards 43 touchdowns and only eight picks.  He was also his team’s leading rusher putting up 864 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground in leading his team to an 11-1 record and a perfect 10-0 regular season.

With McIvor in the fold, the Texas Tech recruiting class is now taking shape nicely.  Tech has eleven 2019 players committed and the class has risen to sixth in the Big 12 according to 247Sports.
