The Texas Tech football recruiting class continues to add talented pieces.  Monday, 3-star safety Brandon Joseph joined that list as he committed to the Red Raiders.

David Gibbs has added another key piece for the future his defense.  The Texas Tech defensive coordinator must certainly be excited about the verbal commitment of 3-star safety Brandon Joseph who Monday announced his intentions to join the Red Raiders in 2019.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound College Station, Texas product is  rated the No. 85 safety in the nation and the No. 141 overall player in Texas. This development comes less than a week after he announced a top three schools of Texas Tech, Arizona and Northwestern.  In addition, Joseph had offers from Colorado, Iowa State, Purdue, Utah and Vanderbilt among others.

As a junior, Joseph was a tackling machine racking up 119 stops (9 for loss), 13 pass breakups and seven interceptions.  That last number should excite his future defensive coordinator given the emphasis Gibbs places on forcing turnovers.

Last season, Texas Tech forced 14 interceptions, an increase of nine over 2016.  Sophomore defensive back Justis Parker led the way with four picks while linebacker Dakota Allen with his two picks was the only other player on the team with more than one interception.

Joseph is a bigger safety who plays a physical brand of football reminiscent of former Texas Tech safety/linebacker Terrance Bullitt who racked up 135 tackles during his career from 2010-2013.  And like Bullitt,  Joseph could be in line to see some early playing time at safety.

With the loss of star senior safety Jah’Shawn Johnson following this season, Gibbs will be looking for a play-maker at the back of his defense in 2019.  Thus far, Joseph is the fourth defensive back to join the 2019 Texas Tech football recruiting class but the other three commits, Markel Reed, Keeyon Stewart and Alex Hogan are projected as corners at this time.

Joseph is the 14th member of the 2019 recruiting class and the 12th to commit since the beginning of June.  He was one of Gibbs’ top targets and  has the look of a potential future stalwart in the defensive backfield.
