In a move that shocked many, former Texas Tech quarterback Davis Webb was released by the New York Giants Sunday after an excellent preseason.

Former Red Raider quarterback, Davis Webb, was cut by the New York Giants Sunday despite a preseason that saw him perform well enough for many experts to assume he had earned the backup QB job.  Now, Webb, one of the most respected Texas Tech football players of the past few years, faces an uncertain professional future.

Webb was a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft and spent last season on the Giants’ roster as the third-string QB.  But a strong preseason seemed to have him positioned to backup veteran starter Eli Manning.

Webb passed for 283 yards and a touchdown in four preseason games this year, while not throwing an interception.  But his performance was not enough to win over the new Giants general manager, Dave Gettleman who was not in charge when Webb was drafted.

However, Gettleman did select Kyla Lauletta out of Richmond in the fourth-round in this year’s draft which could explain why the Giant’s elected to keep the rookie over Webb.  Gettleman likely is trying to put as many of his players on the roster as possible in an attempt to build a new culture in a locker room that turned toxic at the end of 2017.

But if there is anything Texas Tech football fans know about Davis Webb, it is that he is the last player one would have to worry about being a locker room cancer.  After losing the 2015 quarterback competition to Pat Mahomes prior to his junior year, Webb was a fantastic teammate as he handled the difficult situation with class.

In three years at Texas Tech, Webb passed for 5,557 yards and 46 touchdowns but an ankle injury ended his sophomore campaign early in 2014 opening the door for Mahomes.  Webb transferred to Cal for his senior season where he amassed 4,295 yards and 37 touchdowns as he became one of the most highly-regarded NFL prospects in that year’s draft.

It is now being reported that the Giants had been trying to trade Webb in recent days but were unsuccessful in brokering a deal with the Oakland Raiders.  Now, Webb is on the open market but it is hard to imagine he will not be able to catch on with another NFL team before the season begins this weekend.
