One of the top commits in the 2019 Texas Tech football recruiting class, San Angelo QB Maverick McIvor, sustained a torn knee ligament Friday ending his high school career.

San Angelo Central quarterback and 2019 Texas Tech football commit Maverick McIvor saw his high school football career come to an abrupt and unfortunate end Friday night.  The three-star dual-threat quarterback was injured in the Bobcats’ win over Del Rio as he was tackled near the sideline in the third quarter.

McIvor was helped off the field following the play and did not return to the game.  Saturday night, McIvor’s father Lashawn, took to Facebook where he broke the news that Maverick had suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus, ending his season.

Playing QB for the first time as a junior in 2017, McIvor was terrific throwing for 3,372 yards and 43 touchdowns while also leading his team with 864 rushing yards and 8 more scores as the Bobcats went 11-1 on the season.

In June, McIvor committed to Texas Tech becoming the centerpiece for Kliff Kingsbury’s 2019 recruiting class.  He chose Texas Tech over offers from Arizona State, Boise State, Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ole Miss and Washington State and has since picked up an offer from USC.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound prospect is rated as the No. 89 overall player in Texas and the No. 18 dual-threat quarterback in the nation.  Additionally, he earned honorable mention All-State honors a season ago.

This development is similar to the plight faced by another former star West Texas high school quarterback that went on to start for Texas Tech.  After leading Crane High School to the playoffs in 2005, Seth Doege would suffer torn knee ligaments in both 2006 and 2007 with both injuries occurring in fall camp.

Fortunately, Doege would recover to become a two-year starter for the Red Raiders throwing for 8,209 yards and 67 touchdowns combined in 2011-2012.  Hopefully, McIvor will recover from his knee injury to have similar success as a Red Raider.
