Texas Tech football lands three-star 2020 QB Wilson Long
Wilson Long, a three-star quarterback prospect in the class of 2020 has verbally committed to the Texas Tech football program.
In the middle of the 2018 season, the Texas Tech football program got some good news for the 2020 season on Thursday. Wilson Long, a three-star prospect from Austin, Texas has verbally committed to the Red Raiders becoming the first player in his class to pledge to Texas Tech.
The five-foot-11, 178-pound prospect is listed as the No. 16 pro-style QB in the nation and No. 64 overall prospect in Texas according to 247Sports.com. Currently, Texas Tech is his only offer.
Playing at private school Austin Regents, Long led his team to the TAAPS (Texas Alliance of Accredited Private Schools) title game in 2017 accounting for 3,976 total yards and 41 touchdowns.
What makes this commitment interesting is the timing as Long will not be able to sign his letter of intent for over a year. Though the new early sining period has sped up the decision-making timeline for most high school prospect, committing to a school almost 14 months prior to signing day is still unusual, especially for a quarterback with only one offer.
But Long did not want to wait to see if other offers materialized (and they certainly will for a top-100 recruit in Texas). Nor did he decide to wait to see what ultimately happens with Kliff Kingsbury’s job status.

Texas Tech had only two verbal commitments for the 2019 sining class by this time last year and the 2019 quarterback, Maverick McIvor of San Angelo, Texas did not commit to the Red Raiders until June of this year.
It will be interesting to see how Long progresses as a recruit, especially in the eyes of scouts and recruiting services. Playing in the TAAPS division of high school football means he sees far inferior competition than he might in the upper levels of the public school University Interscholastic League.
But if there is one certainty, it is that Kliff Kingsbury knows how to find great quarterbacks. In recent years he discovered a walk-on who would go on to win a Heisman Trophy (Baker Mayfield), two three-star prospects (Pat Mahomes and Davis Webb) that would be drafted in the NFL and another three-star prospect who is the leading freshman passer in the nation this year (Alan Bowman)
Perhaps Wilson Long is the next in the line of great Kliff Kingsbury quarterbacks. But we will have to wait quite a while before we even begin to find out.
