The Texas Tech basketball program has landed the highest-rated recruit in program history in 4-star guard Jahmius Ramsey out of Duncanville, Texas.

Chris Beard has done it again.  Thursday, the Texas Tech basketball head coach landed the highest-rated high school recruit to ever commit to the Red Raiders in Jahmius Ramsey.   It is the second-consecutive recruiting class in which Beard has brought in the biggest recruit in program history after signing top-40 prospect Khavon Moore last year.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Duncanville, Texas product is rated as a 4-star prospect by virtually every recruiting service.  According to ESPN, he is the No. 28 player in the nation and 247Sports has him as the No. 33 prospect in the 2019 class.

Playing on the prestigious Nike EYBL club team circuit last summer, Ramsey averaged 15.6 points, 2.9 assists and 1.5 steals.  As a result, he saw his recruitment skyrocket as he became one of the top uncommitted recruits in the 2019 class.

In addition to Texas Tech, he had scholarship offers from Indiana, Louisville, Memphis, Miami, Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Illinois, Kansas State, LSU, Maryland, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas A&M, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and West Virginia.  After taking an October 4th visit to Memphis, it is believed that Ramsey narrowed his list to the Red Raiders and the Tigers, who are coached by former NBA star Penny Hardaway. Ramsey also took official visits to Miami, Indiana and Louisville this fall but in the end, he decided to say in Texas.

This addition has elevated the Texas Tech recruiting class to elite status.  247Sports rates Tech’s current class at No. 22 overall and No. 4 in the Big 12.  Meanwhile, Rivals is even more bullish on the class ranking it No. 13 in the nation and second in the Big 12.

Also in the 2019 class is 4-star JUCO prospect Khalid Thomas, the preseason JUCO player of the year.  The 6-foot-9 forward will be coming to Lubbock after two years at the College of Southern Idaho.

Beard is also bringing in 7-foot center Russel Tchewa from Connecticut.  A three-star prospect, he will be counted on to help offset the loss of senior forwards Tariq Owens and Norense Odiase.

What is exciting for Texas Tech fans is that Beard is beginning to stack excellent recruiting classes on top of one another.  In the 2017 class, he brought in Zhaire Smith, Jarrett Culver, Davide Moretti and Malik Ondigo.

Meanwhile, last year’s class was the best in program history headlined Moore, a versatile forward who is still working his way back from a broken leg suffered during his high school basketball season last winter.  The five-man class was rated No. 3 in the Big 12 and included three 4-star prospects (Moore, JUCO transfer Deshawn Corprew and guard Kevin McCullar who will be on campus in January but is expected to redshirt).

But with the addition of Jahmius Ramsey, the 2019 class is expected to surpass that class as the benchmark for the program.  The Red Raiders are expected to lose as many as five players this  year with four seniors (Matt Mooney, Owens, Odiase and Brandone Francis) set to graduate and sophomore forward Jarrett Culver expected to head to the NBA after this season.

So it is likely that Chris Bead is not finished adding pieces to the puzzle.  The 2019 class is beginning to become picked over but Tech still has offers out to 4-star forward Terrence Shannon from Illinois and 4-star big man Drew Timme from Richardson, TX but the Red Raiders are not considered favorites for either.

Don’t be surprised to see Beard add another graduate transfer next summer as he did with Owens and Mooney or find an overseas prospect like Moretti.  But whatever Chris Beard does, the Red Raiders are already set up with another fantastic recruiting class.
