The Texas Tech football head coaching search looks to be picking up momentum four days after Kliff Kingsbury was fired.  Wednesday, Utah State head coach Matt Wells had emerged as a leading candidate according to some media reports.

Multiple media outlets have picked up a report by Don Williams of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal indicating that Utah State Head coach Matt Wells has emerged as the leading candidate to be the next Texas Tech football head coach.  Williams, shared that information in a Tweet Wednesday afternoon.

This news has sparked quite a bit of reaction from those who are hoping for a more high-profile name.  And that sentiment was shared by our friends at Saturday Blitz.  Connor Muldowney believes that Wells would be a “nightmare hire”.

"“…if Texas Tech wants to take that next step as a program, it needs to go for a more established coach with consistent success.” he writes.  “Wells has an opportunity to work his way up, but he has just two 10-win seasons in six years with the Aggies and three seasons with six or [more] losses.”"

Wells took over at his alma mater in 2013, the same year Tech hired Kliff Kingsbury, and has led the program to a 44-34 overall record.  In the previous six seasons, the Aggies won just 31 combined games.

One drawback for Wells is the fact that he has not brought home a conference title. In fact, he has only appeared in the Mountain West Conference title game once and that was in his first season.

This year, Utah State entered the final game of the season with an opportunity to host the conference title game.  But the Aggies lost 33-24 to Boise State on the blue turf dropping their record to 10-2 overall and keeping Wells from reaching the league championship game.

Other Texas Tech fans are leery of Wells because of the fact that he had three-consecutive losing seasons prior to 2018.  In fact, from 2015-17, Wells’ team was just 15-23 which was worse than the 18-20 mark Kingsbury led his team to during that same time frame.

Still, 2018 will be the fifth season out of the last six that Utah State has been to a bowl game and Wells was named Mountain West Coach of the Year on Wednesday.  Meanwhile, Tech is missing out on a bowl game for the third time in five years.   Keep checkin in with Wreck ‘Em Red as the search continues.
