Monday, 3-star defensive back Alex Hogan recommitted to the Texas Tech football program after opening his recruitment just over a week ago.

New Texas Tech football head coach Matt Wells and his entire staff has been on the recruiting trail for the past week but until Monday, we had not seen any tangible results of their efforts.  But when 3-star defensive back Alex Hogan recommitted to the Red Raiders, the narrative surrounding the 2019 class took its first positive turn since the firing of Kliff Kingsbury three weeks ago.

The 5-foot-11, 165-pound corner announced on December 2nd that he was exploring his options again after being committed to the Red Raiders since July.  But now, the No. 72 corner in the 2019 class and the No. 108 overall prospect in Texas according to 247Sports.com is back on board with Texas Tech.

Hogan was apparently a high priority for the new staff as Wells, defensive coordinator Keith Patterson and defensive backs coach Julius Brown all traveled to Houston for an in-home visit.

In eleven games this year for Lamar High School, Hogan registered 29 tackles and picked off three passes while being credited with eight pass defenses.  He was also a weapon in the return game averaging 33.9 yards per kickoff return and 17.3 yards per punt return.  Additionally, he rushed for four touchdowns while averaging 12.3 yards per carry on 14 attempts.

Including Texas Tech, he held offers from Iowa State, Memphis, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, Minnesota, North Texas, SMU and Utah.  In April, he took an official visit to Colorado and a month later, he made an official visit to Memphis.  He also visited Iowa State this summer before taking his official visit to Lubbock.

The Red Raiders have seen their defensive back recruiting class go from a strength to a concern in recent weeks with four players (including Hogan) reneging on their verbal commitments during the coaching change.  Hogan is currently the only defensive back in the Red Raiders’ class but that is certain to change with Tech needing to add talent to a secondary that allowed the second-most passing yards in the nation this season and having to replace both starting safeties.

Wells has also been to visit former 2019 commit Keeyon Stewart in the past week and many believe that the Red Raiders are still in the lead for his services.  Additionally, Coffeyville Community College defensive back Brion Murray, who took a visit to Virginia Tech this weekend, reported an offer from the Red Raiders last week as well.

Tech’s current recruiting class sits at 14 players now that Alex Hogan is back on board.  But there is still plenty of work to do for Wells and his assistants with the early signing window set to arrive in just nine days.  Keep checking in with “Wreck ’em Red” for all the latest as the Red Raiders try to rebuild their class.
