Thursday, 3-star QB Maverick McIvor from San Angelo, Texas recommitted to the Texas Tech football program two weeks after reopening his recruitment.
Thus far, Matt Wells’ best work on the recruiting trail has come with 2019 prospects that had decomitted after the firing of Kliff Kingsbury. Thursday, the new Texas Tech football head coach got his biggest win thus far when 3-star 2019 QB Maverick McIvor recommitted to the Red Raiders less than two weeks after reopening his recruitment.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound dual-threat quarterback, who is rehabbing from an early September knee injury that required surgery and cost him all but two games of his senior season, originally committed to the Red Raiders in June. He is the No. 18 dual threat QB in the nation and the No. 98 overall player in Texas (according to 247Sports.com) and holds offers from USC, Arizona State, Boise State, Iowa, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ole Miss, USC and Washington State among others.
As a junior, McIvor threw for 3,415 yards while rushing for 870 more and accounting for 52 total touchdowns. It was quite a debut season at QB after spending his sophomore campaign at receiver.
It can not be understated how big of a victory this is for Wells. We have seen in recent years how the lack of depth at QB has hurt the Red Raiders and that issue can be traced back to the inability to land a quarterback in the 2015 signing class.

If McIvor had not recommitted, Wells and his staff would have been forced to scramble in search of a quarterback in much the same way that Kingsbury had to in the weeks prior to signing day in 2015 following the sudden decommitment of 4-star commit Jarrett Stidham. And with the new early signing period just over a week away, there are few quality options remaining on the 2019 QB market.
But with McIvor now in the fold once again, the outlook at QB is more reassuring for Texas Tech. 2018’s breakout star Alan Bowman is set to return for his sophomore season and will lead the team for the next two or three seasons. Tech will also return McLane Carter for his senior season in 2019 and will have Jett Duffey on the roster for two more seasons as well meaning that McIvor likely will not be pressed into immediate action.
However, there now appears to be a clear line of succession for McIvor to take over for Alan Bowman as either a redshirt sophomore or junior. His addition also bolsters a Texas Tech recruiting class that had lost six commits since the firing of Kingsbury.
Fortunately, Wells has been able to bring both McIvor and 4-star defensive back Alex Hogan back on board. Additionally, fellow Texas Tech commits like 4-star defensive end Gilbert Ibeneme from Houston and 3-star OT Trevor Roberson from Wellington, Texas have confirmed their intention to sign with the Red Raiders after meeting with the new coaching staff.
With McIvor, Texas Tech currently has 15 players committed. 247Sports ranks the class No. 58 overall and No. 8 in the nation. But that could change as soon as this weekend when a host of standout recruits will be visiting Lubbock including 4-star defensive end Steven Parker from Dallas, who has been a long-time Red Raider commit but who decomitted during the coaching change.
Matt Wells appears to be hitting the recruiting tail as hard as possible in the first few weeks of his tenure and we are starting to see the results of his labor. Fortunately, he has been able to land one of the best quarterbacks in the state hopefully securing Texas Tech’s future at the game’s most important position.
