Texas Tech football: Breaking down 2019 early signings
The Texas Tech football program signed eleven players during the December signing period so let’s take a look inside the class to see what we might be able to expect from the early signees.
New Texas Tech football head coach Matt Wells has cleared his first hurdle by navigating the December early signing period with a representative class still in tact. He and his coaching staff spent nearly three-straight weeks on the recruiting trail trying to keep this class together ahead of this week’s window and their work yielded as good of results as could be expected.
Tech signed eleven players this week, which is second fewest in the Big 12 (ahead of only Kansas) meaning that the story of this class will not be told until the traditional signing day in February. But right now, Tech has a higher average ranking per recruit than last year’s class (0.8484 this year compared to 0.8376 last year) and that could increase if Tech is able to win some key recruiting battles this winter.
Thus far, Tech has added seven offensive players and four defenders. That means Wells will likely look to fill up on defense in the next two months, especially at defensive back and along the defensive line.
Tech may turn to the JUCO ranks for reinforcements being as the high school talent pool is rather shallow now that the December signing window has come and gone. But regardless of where the talent comes from, it will be fascinating to see how well the new coaching staff can build a class and whether it can close out the recruiting cycle with some momentum.
Of course, there will be plenty of time in the upcoming weeks to look forward to February. Right now, let’s look a little deeper at the players that are already official Red Raiders by throwing out some superlatives for the early signees.
