In the spirit of Christmas, let’s take a look at what gifts we would give Matt Wells if we were Santa Claus.
Christmas morning has arrived as children young and old around the world awoke today to a bevy of gifts from Santa Claus. But while every Red Raider fan is hopefully enjoying what they found under the tree, we all wish we could give new Texas Tech football head coach Matt Wells exactly what he wants as well.
Aside from peace on Earth and the prosperity of our loved ones and all the other boring stuff that adults feel obligated to say we want for Christmas, virtually every Red Raider football fan would love nothing more for Christmas this year than optimism about the direction of the program after a decade of mediocrity.
While most of the other programs on campus have risen to the top of their respective sports, our most beloved sport has become nothing more than an annual exercise in how to handle disappointment. What has made life as a Red Raider fan especially difficult to swallow is Tech’s heartless way of giving us hope only to to fall apart down the stretch, as was the case this year when a 5-2 start was followed by an 0-5 finish.
Tech football needed a reboot and that is what it got with Matt Wells. He brings to Lubbock a new energy and a fresh approach that will hopefully shake the program out of its lethargy.
In a way, Kirby Hocutt gave Texas Tech football fans a gift this year by making a change in the leadership of a program that had become infected by issues that never seemed to improve. So in the spirit of Christmas, let’s look at some gifts that we wish we could give Matt Wells in order to help him succeed in his new role.
