Gavin Potter, a 3-star linebacker from Oklahoma and current verbal commit to Kansas State, has received an offer from the Texas Tech football coaching staff.

The Texas Tech football staff is busy trying to fill the remaining spots int he 2019 class ahead of next month’s National Signing Day.  Another new name to keep an eye on is Gavin Potter, a 3-star linebacker from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound prospect is currently committed to Kansas State but given the coaching change in Manhattan, it would make sense for him to explore all options.  Rated as the No. 14 player in Oklahoma and the No. 97 outside linebacker by 247Sports, Potter holds offers from Colorado State, Incarnate Word, Kansas and Kent State in addition to Texas Tech and Kansas State.

Jacob Unruh of NewsOK.com recently profiled Potter’s journey from backup QB to All-State linebacker.  He reports that Potter registered 78 tackles, three fumble recoveries, two blocked kicks and an interception following in the footsteps of his father who played linebacker at Arkansas Tech.

"“I always thought I was going to college and be a quarterback at a big school,” Potter told Unruh. “I thought I was going to have to wait the year out and go to JUCO. Then about four games in, I thought maybe I could get some D-I offers."

Currently, Tech has two linebackers in the 2019 class, Tyrique Matthews of Houston and Bryce Robinson from Sachse, both of whom have already signed their letters of intent.  But Potter could potentially fulfill a new role for the Red Raiders next year.

New defensive coordinator Keith Patterson employs a 3-3-5 defense that utilizes a hybrid safety/linebacker who is primarily tasked with rushing the passer.  Given Potters’ size and the fact that he had 23 tackles for loss this season, he might be a fit for Patterson’s hybrid position.

Helping Broken Arrow to its first ever state title, Potter was a key member of the top defense in Oklahoma playing alongside TCU linebacker commit Zach Marcheselli.  The two-time Oklahoma high school wrestling champion turned heads in his first year ever playing linebacker and appears to be an under-the-radar prospect with plenty of upside.  The question now is whether Texas Tech can flip him away from a Big 12 rival by taking advantage of another school’s coaching chaos.
