The Texas Tech football team has made the top-5 for 3-star 2019 athlete Alante Brown, who was previously a Michigan State commit.

With the February 6th National Signing Day for college football prospects quickly approaching, the Texas Tech football team is in the mix for a highly-coveted out of state prospect.  Tuesday, 3-star 2019 receiver Alante Brown from Chicago announced that Tech is one of five schools still in the running for his services.

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound prospect played quarterback in high school but projects as a slot receiver in college.  He is the No. 12 player in Illinois and the No. 80 receiver in the nation according to 247Sports.com.

He is also considering Florida State, Tennessee, Pitt and Iowa State after decomitting from Michigan State on January 26th.   Additionally, he holds offers from Cincinnati, Minnesota and Missouri among others.

247Sports is reporting that Brown visited Florida State this past weekend.  Thus, it is no surprise that they list the Seminoles as the favorites to land the dynamic athlete who runs a 4.57 40-yard dash according to 247.

In two years as a high school QB, Brown threw for only 802 yards and eight touchdowns.  He also carried the ball 70 times for 324 yards and three more scores.

But he is looking to make the transition to inside receiver and there may be no better place for that than Texas Tech.  And Lubbock could be a perfect fit for him given the current roster construction.

It would seem unlikely that a player with only one career reception in high school would be able to pick up the nuances of playing receiver at the collegiate level in his first year on campus.  But at Tech, he would be afforded the time to develop as the Red Raiders appear to be set at slot receiver with senior Seth Collins, sophomore Kesean Carter and junior transfer McLane Mannix (who may or may not be able to play in 2019) already on the roster.

Currently, Tech could stand to add another receiver in this year’s class.  Thus far, only two 2019 receivers, Trey Cleveland and Cameron Cantrell, have joined the Red Raiders with both signing their letters of intent in the December early signing window.

The Red Raiders are still attempting to piece together a representative class in Matt Wells’ first year.  But currently, their class sits at just 63rd in the nation and ninth in the Big 12, due in large part because it has only eleven signees and four verbal commits (though Alex Orona, a kicker from LaGrange, TX is not likely to sign with the Red Raiders who appear to be going in a different direction at the position having landed Austin McNamara from Arizona since the transition from Kliff Kingsbury to Wells).
