The Texas Tech football program has added 17 new signees in the 2019 recruiting class and these five players are the most crucial pickups.

There’s no way to sugarcoat the fact that the 2019 Texas Tech football signing class is one of the lowest-rated of any Power 5 school in the country.  Ranked last in the Big 12 and just 67th overall, the Red Raider’s class is ahead of only two other Power 5 schools.

That troubling reality is further compounded by the fact that several Big 12 teams had excellent results on the recruiting trail this year.  Texas finished with the No. 3 class in the nation according to 247Sports.com as Tom Herman adds to a roster that lost very little from last year’s Sugar Bowl championship team .  Meanwhile, the Oklahoma class was not far behind at No. 6 in the nation.

The next best class in the Big 12 belongs to TCU which sits at No. 33 overall, two spots ahead of Baylor and four spots ahead of Oklahoma State.  Meanwhile, Iowa State landed the No. 47 class in the country directly in front of West Virginia.

Interestingly, the Mountaineers caught a bit of a break in this year’s recruiting cycle.  That’s because Dana Holgorsen did not leave Morgantown until after the WVU bowl game, meaning that the Mountaineers had already singed virtually their entire class in the December window keeping them from suffering almost no roster defections when Holgorsen left for Houston and Neal Brown took over.

The other three teams in the Big 12 to make coaching changes comprise the bottom tier of the 2019 class rankings.  Kansas State signed the No. 62 class in the nation while Kansas landed the No. 65 class, two spots ahead of Texas Tech.

One of the reasons that Tech’s class is ranked so low is because of its small size.  And with only 17 signees, the Red Raiders will need a greater success rate out of this year’s class than the program has seen from previous classes.  So let’s take a look at the five most important signees because for this class to keep from setting the program back, these players must turn into key contributors before their time in Lubbock ends.
