Texas Tech football: 5 top 2020 prospects with offers from Red Raiders

Recruiting never stops so let’s take a look at five of the top targets for the Texas Tech football program in the class of 2020.

Though we are less than a week from National Signing Day 2019, the next recruiting cycle is already in full swing.  And this could prove to be a make-or-break class for new Texas Tech football head coach Matt Wells and his staff.

As we have discussed at length, the 2019 class left quite a bit to be desired.  For the second-consecutive year, Tech landed the lowest-rated class in the Big 12 and one of the lowest of any Power 5 school in the country.

The December signing window, implemented in 2017, turned out to be Texas Tech’s worst nightmare this time around.  When Kliff Kingsbury was fired just weeks before the period during which nearly 75% of prospects signed their letters of intent, it was almost virtually guaranteed that the Red Raiders’ 2019 class would be the greatest casualty of the coaching change.

But it is time to move on and Wells simply can’t afford another sub par class in 2020.  With that understanding in mind and knowing the losing proposition they faced in 2019, the new Red Raider staff started working on the current class almost as soon as they got to Lubbock.

According to the 247Sports database, 79 players in the current class already hold offers from Texas Tech.  That is an extremely high number given the fact that the staff has not conducted any junior day events nor have they had more than a handful of weeks since the holiday dead period to contact recruits.  If Wells and Co. keep up this pace, they will easily surpass the 146 offers the previous staff handed out in their last full recruiting cycle (2018).

Part of the high number of offers to go out already has to do with the back-to-back small classes the program has landed in the past two cycles.  This year, Tech added only 17 players despite having as many as 25 spots to fill after signing just 22 players in 2018 and 19 in 2017.

So let’s go inside the current list of targets to look at the top players to hold offers from the Red Raiders.  As we do, it will become apparent that Wells and his staff are swinging for the fences this year.
