DE Jason Harris – Gilbert, AZ

It is already evident that the new staff will be looking outside of Texas in this recruiting class and one big-time out-of-state prospect with an offer from the Red Raiders is Jason Harris, a 4-star defensive end from Arizona.

At 6-foot-7, 220-pounds, he is a physical specimen.  Ranked as the No. 37 player in the nation and the No. 4 weak-side defensive end in the class, he holds offers from such programs as Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Oklahoma, Texas, A&M and USC.

So why would Harris even give Tech a second glance?  Being as Tech’s new defensive coordinator Keith Patterson was on the Arizona State staff from 2014-2017, there could be some connections that might open doors for the Red Raiders.

Tech signed Arizona product Austin McNamara, the top punter in the nation, in the 2019 class so there is reason to believe that the Grand Canyon State could be a new mining ground for Texas Tech.  And pulling the No. 2 player in Arizona out of Pac 12 territory would be a huge win.

Perhaps Wells could team up with Chris Beard to land this two-sport star who is also the No. 2 basketball prospect in Arizona and holds a basketball scholarship offer from Arizona State.  As a high school sophomore, he averaged 18.9 points per game so perhaps he could follow in the steps of former Texas Tech tight end Joey Hawkins who walked on to the Texas Tech basketball team to play for Bob Knight and Beard in 2004-05 after playing football.

But regardless of which sport he plays, Tech would be lucky to have such a physically dominating athlete on campus.  Certainly, Beard and Wells would figure out a way to share.
