Tuesday, 4-star forward Micah Peavy released his top five and the Texas Tech basketball program made the cut.

One of the top high school players in the class of 2020 has narrowed his list of schools and the Texas Tech basketball program remains in the mix.  4-star forward Micah Peavy released his top five schools and the Red Raiders made the cut along with Houston, Michigan, TCU and  LSU.  In addition, he holds offers from Florida, Oklahoma, Tennessee and A&M among others.

The Duncanville product is the No. 4 player in Texas for the class of 2020 and the No. 15 small forward in the nation according to 247Sports.com.  MaxPreps reports that the 6-foot-5, 172-pounder is averaging 15.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game this season for the No. 12 team in Texas.

Texas Tech has already landed one of Duncanville’s stars in Peavy’s teammate and 4-star guard Jahmius Ramsey, the No. 30 player in the class of 2019 and the highest-ranked player to ever sign with the Red Raiders.  Perhaps that will give Chris Beard the inside track with the junior who is ranked as the No. 54 player in the nation in his class.

Not quite as athletic as Ramsey, Peavy may actually be a more well-rounded player.  He has a better outside shot and looks to have a more polished all-around game.  Where as Ramsey uses his elite athleticism (which some say is in the neighborhood of former Red Raider forward Zhaire Smith) to attack the rim with malicious intent, Peavy is a distributor and playmaker who can also score effectively.

He would be a tremendous fit in Beard’s motion offense as he is the embodiment of “position-less” basketball, which is what the Red Raider head coach envisions for his ideal roster.  Versatility is a key for Beard and Peavy, who is a coach’s son, could slot in at either guard spot or as a forward.

The competition in this key recruiting battle will be fierce though.  Peavy has already taken an official visit to LSU and is  familiar with the Houston program having lived in the Space City before moving to Duncanville prior to this season when his father was hired as the Panthers’ head coach.

But landing this elite prospect appears to be Texas Tech’s top priority.  And though he would not be on the floor for the Red Raiders until the 2020-2021 season, it is already easy to see where he would fill a need on the roster.

With Jarrett Culver expected to head to the NBA this summer and 4-star 2018 signee Khavon Moore’s future in the program somewhat uncertain, Tech could have a void to fill on the wing by the time Peavy arrives.

Currently, there is no player of Peavy’s skill set on the roster outside of Culver.  And there exists the real possibility that Ramsey could be a one-and-done player meaning Peavy could be an essential part of the puzzle in two seasons.

Texas Tech does not currently have any players committed for 2020 but that is certain to change in the upcoming weeks.  Though the 2018-19 regular season is just hitting its most critical stretch, the Red Raiders are also focused on the future and they are hoping Micah Peavy is a huge part of that.
