Abner Dubar, a defensive back from Anna, Texas, gave his verbal commitment to the Texas Tech football program Wednesday.

The Texas Tech football program picked up its second verbal commitment from a member of the class of 2020 on Wednesday.  Abner Dubar, a 6-foot-tall, 176-pound defensive back from Anna, Texas announced his intention to play for the Red Raiders Wednesday via Twitter.

With no ranking from 247Sports.com or Rivals.com, Dubar appears to be a bit of an under-the-radar recruit.  According to 247Sports, he holds only one other offer, (Illinois State) but has received interest from Baylor and Oklahoma State.  Meanwhile, Rivals lists Oklahoma, North Texas and SMU as other programs that have been in contact.

Last season, Dubar registered 61 tackles and for his career, he has 96 stops and five tackles for loss.  He was in Lubbock last month for the Texas Tech Junior Day event and now he is a Red Raider commit.

Restocking the depth in the defensive backfield is a must for Texas Tech head coach Matt Wells and his staff.  It is always a priority to have options in the secondary when trying to combat the high-powered offenses in the Big 12 but currently, Tech is not as stocked in that area as one might like to see.

Tech lost five defensive backs from last season’s team including safeties Jah’Shawn Johnson, Vaughnte Dorsey and John Bonney.  And this season, five more seniors will play their last year of college football including Justus Parker, Douglas Coleman and Desmon Smith.

But in the 2019 recruiting class, Wells’ staff added just two defensive backs.  That was in large part because four defensive backs decomitted in the wake of the Kliff Kingsbury firing and only one, Alex Hogan, came back on board.

Dubar joins quarterback Donovan Smith in the Red Raider 2020 recruiting class.  And both have something in common…they are unknowns.  While Dubar is unknown because of his lack of recruiting rankings, Smith is a wildcard because he has yet to be a starting QB.

Playing at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas for the past two years, the son of Texas Tech running backs coach DeAndre Smith has been a wide receiver thus far in his career.  But he is set to enroll in school in the Lubbock area where he will play quarterback for his senior year.

Next. Matt Wells needs to follow the Chris Beard blueprint. dark

As for Dubar, it will be interesting to see if he becomes more of a well-known recruit now that he has committed to a Big 12 school.  Sometimes, overlooked players draw more attention from recruiting services once they are committed to a Power 5 program.  But regardless of what the scouting sites think, it is always good to add depth in the secondary as Texas Tech did on Wednesday.
