Now that Texas Tech basketball head coach Chris Beard has signed a lucrative new contract extension, let’s take a look at the impact it will have on various aspects of the program.

Since the moment the Texas Tech basketball team’s season came to an end in the national title game, the focus of Red Raider fans has been on securing a future with Chris Beard at the helm of the program.  Monday, the news that most had been expecting broke when details of Beard’s new 6-year contract extension became public.

Signed through the 2024-25 season, Beard will make an average of $4.5 million per season.  That makes him the third-highest paid college basketball coach in the NCAA behind Kentucky’s John Calipari and Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski.

This is the second year in-a-row that Beard and Texas Tech have agreed on a 6-year extension.  Last season, AD Kirby Hocutt rewarded his basketball coach with a 6-year, $19 million deal after Beard led his Red Raiders to the program’s first Elite 8 appearance.

And after taking his team to the final game of the NCAA Tournament this year, that contract seemed rather insufficient given what Beard means to the Texas Tech athletic program as well as the university as a whole.

Thus, his is now making an average of $1.1 million more per season and looks to be in place as the face of Texas Tech basketball for the foreseeable future.  Locking up Beard was once again the most important task of this basketball offseason and with that accomplished, we can now look forward to a bright future on the hardwood.

Beard’s contract sets the program up to continue the greatest run of any men’s athletic program in Texas Tech history.  So let’s take a closer look at how this new deal impacts numerous aspects of Red Raider hoops.
