Monday, the Texas Tech football program picked up a verbal commitment from 3-star safety Jonathan Davis from Dallas.

Jonathan Davis, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound safety from Dallas, Texas has verbally committed to the Texas Tech football program.  He announced his decision via Twitter Monday afternoon.

The 3-star prospect is rated the No. 158 player in Texas and the No. 70 safety in the nation by 247Sports.com.  In addition to Tech, he holds offers from Arizona, Colorado, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Houston, Kansas and Purdue among others.

In 2018, Davis amassed 50 tackles while picking off one pass.  He was also credited with six pass break-ups.  As a sophomore, he registered 36 tackles and broke up two passes.

One interesting aspect of Davis’ commitment is the fact that the South Oak Cliff High School product picked the Red Raiders over Kansas where former South Oak Cliff head coach Emmett Jones is the wide receiver’s coach.  Previously in the same position at Tech for the past three seasons, Jones is known as an ace recruiter of Dallas-area talent.

And since joining the staff of new KU head coach Les Miles, he has won several high-profile recruiting battles against the Red Raiders.  After not being retained by Matt Wells, Jones helped lure 4-star South Oak Cliff defensive end Steven Parker to Kansas as well as Skyline H.S. running back Velton Gardner, both of whom were at one time Red Raider commits in the class of 2019.

But Davis has shunned the Jayhawks and over 15 other programs to become the third Red Raider commit in the class of 2020.  And after the Red Raiders did not sign any safety prospects in the most recent signing class, the position certainly had to be addressed in the current recruiting cycle.

After seeing three safeties exhaust their eligibility after the 2018 season, including starters Jah’Shawn Johnson and Vaughnte Dorsey, Tech enters this fall with some uncertainty at the position.  Many expect senior Justus Parker to get a shot at safety after playing most of his career as a corner.  And Adam Beck, a transfer from Minnesota who will be a redshirt sophomore this year, should be in the mix as well.  Other players such as junior Thomas Leggett, sophomore John Davis Jr. and redshirt freshman Adonis Brown to also get a look at safety.

But none of these players are entrenched at the position meaning there could be a tremendous opportunity for a young player such as Davis to contribute early in his career.  Tech’s recruiting class remains the smallest in the Big 12 and is ranked No. 10 in the conference and No. 78 overall. Hopefully, that will change as the crucial summer recruiting period picks up momentum.
