The Texas Tech football program has made the cut for 2020 safety Kobee Minor, one of the top 200 players in Texas and a top 100 safety in the nation.

Kobee Minor, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound safety from Lake Dallas, Texas has trimmed his list of potential schools down to six and the Texas Tech football program is still in the running.  Sunday, the 3-star prospect Tweeted out his top six and Cal, Iowa State, Liberty, Kansas and Houston all made the cut along with Tech.

Rated the No. 184 player in Texas and the No. 82 safety in the nation by 247Sports.com, Minor also holds offers from New Mexico, Southern Mississippi, Texas State, Tulane, Tulsa and others. And though he is a bit undersized, he has been a tremendously productive player.

Last season, he amassed 97 tackles, three interceptions, four pass-breakups and a forced fumble. And as a sophomore, he was nearly as strong with 84 tackles, an interception, four passes defended and four tackles for loss.

Physically, Minor is reminiscent of former Red Raider safety Jah’Shawn Johnson who was 5-foot- 10, 172-pounds when coming out of Ennis High School as a three-star prospect in 2014.  And Johnson, who was rated the No. 87 safety in the nation, went on to a fantastic career in Lubbock as a 4-year starter who amassed 312 tackles and 6 interceptions while earning All-Big 12 recognition.

The Red Raiders are currently searching for the next Jah’Shawn Johnson to quarterback their secondary after losing three safeties from last season, including both starters.  As a result, Matt Wells and his staff have already extended offers to as many as 17 safeties in the class of 2020.

Finding a way to reinforce the pass defense must be a priority of new defensive coordinator Keith Patterson.  Last year, the Red Raiders ranked second-to-last in the nation against the pass allowing 288.3 yards per game.

And with for defensive backs playing their final year of college football this season, Texas Tech will have to replenish its secondary depth by bringing in a handful of signees in this year’s class.  In 2019, Tech signed only two defensive backs, Alex Hogan from Houston and Dadrion Taylor, who played running back for Carl Albert High School in Oklahoma City.

Currently, Tech has only three recruits committed for 2020, the fewest of any Big 12 school.  But one, Jonathan Davis, is a 3-star safety who could help out early in his career.   But expect at least one more safety to be added to the mix and Minor might make an interesting option given his high school productivity.

dark. Next. Three games Texas Tech can't afford to lose in 2019

The Red Raiders are set to host a huge recruiting weekend June 21-22 when as many as 20 prospects are expected to take official visits but there is no word whether Minor plans to attend.  Hopefully after that weekend, the Big 12’s lowest-ranked 2020 recruiting class will no longer belong to Texas Tech.
