The Texas Tech basketball program has made the top-7 for 3-star 2020 guard/forward Che Evans, a top-200 player in the nation.

Almost nothing is more exciting for Texas Tech basketball fans than following Chris Beard’s efforts on the recruiting trail as he continues to court some of the best players in the nation.  And recently, 3-star guard Che Evans listed the Red Raiders as one of seven schools he is still considering.

The 6-foot-6, 185-pound guard/forward from Maryland lists Tech, San Diego State, TCU, Boise State, Florida, Ohio State and Arkansas as the schools still in the running to land him.  In addition, he holds offers from such schools as Boston College, UCLA, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Oregon State and Penn State.

Rated by 247Sports.com as the No. 33 small forward in the nation and the No.168 overall prospect in the class of 2020, has taken an official visit to Boise and was in Lubbock for an unofficial visit last August.  He has also unofficially visited Seaton Hall, Rutgers, Georgetown, Ohio State and UCLA.

"Our friend Daniel Benjamin at Busting Brackets has the following scouting report on one of the more coveted prospects on the East Coast, “Evans is a 6’5″ athletic wing with a scorer’s mentality as he can put the ball in the basket a number of ways, although he is at his best when he gets to the basket whether in transition or in the halfcourt. Evans also possesses good handles and is a capable shooter. However, he does need to work on his offensive versatility and shooting range as well as finishing through contact.”"

And there could be a connection with one of last season’s biggest Red Raider stars that is driving Evans’ interest in Tech.  A member of the Team Melo AAU basketball organization for players in the Baltimore area, Evans has a relationship with another Maryland native, Tariq Owens, who was also part of Team Melo prior to his collegiate career.

Expect the Red Raiders to be selective in the next recruiting cycle though.  Currently, there are only two seniors on the roster, grad transfers Chris Clarke and T.J. Holyfield, meaning that the next recruiting class should be much smaller than the 2019 class, even if one or two players decide to transfer from the program as is the norm in college basketball each season.

But Evans could be a natural fit in Beard’s system.  At 6-foot-6, he is capable of guarding multiple positions on the court while filling multiple roles on offense.

247Sports currently lists 17 prospects in the class of 2020 with offers from Tech.  The two most commonly mentioned as being seriously interested in the Red Raiders are Micah Peavy, the No. 53 player in the nation and No. 2 player in Texas and Moses Moody from Little Rock Arkansas, the No. 35 player in the nation.

It will be interesting to see how Chris Beard works his roster in the 2020 recruiting cycle.  With Davide Moretti and DeShawn Corprew set to be seniors in 2020-21, will he target more grad transfers as he has every year he’s been in Lubbock or will he try to restock with younger talent like Che Evans.  Either way, Red Raider fans are more excited than ever to find out where their basketball program is headed.
